PennDOT Transportation Survey

2017 Twelve Year Program

Every two years, the Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission and PennDOT update Pennsylvania’s Twelve Year Transportation Program. The open public comment period is March 6 – April 19, 2017. During this period, you have the chance to share feedback by taking the online survey or participating in the Online Public Meeting on March 21, 2017.

In conjunction with PennDOT’s Twelve Year Program update, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission will use public input submitted to the State Transportation Commission in the development of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s 2019-2022 Transportation Improvement Program.

Four Cycling Fatalities in Three Years

On August 30, 2016, McKees Rocks’ resident Dennis Flanagan was killed by a motorist on Route 51 while commuting from the Southside of Pittsburgh on his bicycle. This is the fourth fatality in the last three years along the share-the-road corridor of Route 51 between Pittsburgh and Monaca, Pa.

The Ohio River Trail Council and the cycling community mourns the preventable loss of Dennis Flanagan, April 27, 1969 ~ August 30, 2016 (age 47), Arthur Bell, May 4, 1961 ~ August 6, 2015 (age 54), Taylor Banks, March 24, 1991 ~ October 31, 2014 (age 23), and Emily Jancart, September 7, 1995 ~ July 21, 2013 (age 17).

Join us as we request the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to improve safety by updating the cycling infrastructure along Route 51 with protected bike lanes. Protected bike lanes are a simple concept, they are like sidewalks for bikes. Because they use physical dividers like curbs, planters, parked cars or posts to separate bike and auto traffic on busy streets, protected lanes are essential to building a full network of bike-friendly routes. They make it pleasant for anyone to bike, just as sidewalks make it pleasant for anyone to walk.

Moreover, we ask you to endorse the development of the Ohio River Trail, an on-road route and off-road path that parallels Route 51/65 along the Ohio River.
